Baby Jogger City Select Vs. City Select Lux

With the ability to convert from a pram to a travel system, and from a single to a double and even a triple, the Baby Jogger City Select was with no doubts, the premium of stroller technology back in the day.

And then the City Select Lux was unveiled. While it didn’t come to replace the City Select completely, the Lux brought several major plus points including a new set of sleeker fabrics, a more compact fold, and 4 additional configurations. It also has several design flaws and a slightly higher price tag, of course.

So, does the newer version bring a real LUX feel or should you just get the City Select? Join us as we compare the features and performance of the Baby Jogger City Select vs. City Select Lux.

Baby Jogger City Select Overview

The main intention behind the craftsmanship of the City Select is to give you a stroller that literally grows with your child and family.

This stroller’s sturdy frame is designed to accommodate a second seat, so you won’t need to purchase a double with the arrival of your second kid. And for parents expecting twins, the City Select can take 2 infant car seats or bassinets, and later allow you to fit the main seats as the kids gain weight and height. Even better, it can also accommodate a third child (2 years and up) on a glider board at the back.

This stroller measures 43.5” x 25.75” x 38.5” when unfolded and will accommodate kids right from birth (with the addition of a bassinet or car seat) and up to 45lbs per seat and about 40’’ in height

Thanks to its inline/tandem design, this stroller will fit through narrow store doors and parked cars. However, you’ll really need some muscles considering its weight- 28lbs in single mode and 34lbs in double- and length.

Among other features that make it a great stroller, the City Select has;

  • One-handed 3 recline positions
  • All-terrain air-filled 12’’ rear rubber wheels with suspension system and plastic 8’’ swivel-lock front wheels
  • Height adjustable handlebar with rubberized grip
  • UV 50+ canopy with silent extension and peek-a-boo window
  • 15-pound maximum capacity basket
  • 2-pound maximum capacity mesh pocket at the back of the seat

Pros

  • Hand-operated brake
  • Flexible for growing families
  • Tandem design to fit through narrow doors

Cons

  • Heavy especially with 2 seats
  • Won’t fold with 2 seats attached
  • Quite heavy in its double mode
  • No self-standing or auto-locking

Baby Jogger City Select Lux Overview

The Lux is a revamped version of the City Select but it shares a lot of features with its predecessor. The single most advantage that this stroller borrowed from the City Select is the versatility of configuring it for up to 3 kids at once by being able to convert into a travel system, pram, single, double, and even a triple.

Its seat has a UV 50+ canopy with a super silent magnetic peek-a-boo window and its’ also very roomy and can accommodate riders weighing up to 45 pounds.

The City Select Lux also has the same 12-inch rear wheels and 8-inch front wheels of the original City Select, and an adjustable handlebar that lengthens from 38.5’’ to 42.5’’ to accommodate parents of almost all heights.

Maneuvering is great on different terrains (except on sandy beach) and it’s possible to push it with one hand. However, just as its predecessor, taking it through tight shopping isles won’t be so breezy given its length and weight (28lbs- single configuration and 34lbs-double configuration).

  • Quite expensive
  • Doesn’t stand when folded

So, what makes the newer version Lux?

Baby Jogger City Select Vs. City Select Lux- Configurations

The Select Lux adds 4 more seat combinations in addition to the 16 settings that the City Select offers. This means that your passengers have a lot more ways to ride. The only caveat here is that the Lux does not have enough room for you to recline the main seats (except when in both seats facing parent mode) or infant car seat.

Baby Jogger City Select Vs. City Select Lux- Car Seat Adapters

These 2 strollers share most car seat adapters. The only exception, though, is that the Lux has a special adapter that makes the Nuna Pipa only compatible with it.

Baby Jogger City Select Vs. City Select Lux: Updated seat fabric

This is actually one of the major changes that the Lux brings. The seat fabrics have been upgraded and are available in 5 classy colors; slate, port, indigo, granite, and port

Baby Jogger City Select Vs. City Select Lux: Compatible Accessories

There is a whole range of accessories that are compatible with either of these 2 strollers including a bug canopy, shopping tote, handmuffs, bassinet kit, and glider board among others.

However, there are others that are only compatible with the City Select only;

  • Belly Bar
  • Child tray

And others have been engineered for use with the Lux and can’t be used with the previous model

  • Lux cupholder
  • Bench seat
  • Lux second seat adapters

Baby Jogger City Select Vs. City Select Lux: Fold

This is yet another area where the Lux has the upper hand. The fact that it has a 30% smaller fold compared to the City Select means that you have higher chances of fitting into a small trunk. Another bonus feature of the Lux is that it has an automatic lock.

Baby Jogger City Select Vs. City Select Lux: Smooth rides and Brake

Rides with the Lux are much smoother now thanks to an all-wheel suspension system. Your passengers will still feel some bumps when cruising on rough pavements, though.

The brake system has also been upgraded. Although the City Select also has a handbrake, the City Select has added a decelerator that allows you to slow the stroller downhill with just a light touch. You can also engage the brakes completely when parking.

Reasons to buy the:

City Select

The stroller is almost $100 cheaper than the Lux, yet it packs a whole of features that you won’t find on a standard stroller including its seat settings.  It’s also durable and can, therefore, be passed to other kids.

Lux

Although relatively pricey, this new model comes in sleeker colors and brings more configuration options. Its compatibility with a bench is a nice addition too and it also brings a promise of smoother rides with its all-wheel suspension system. But what most parents will love is the ease of decelerating downhill.
